LOCATION AND AREA
Perambalur Thiruvalluvar district is bounded on the north by
Rajaji, Villippuram-Ramasamy-Padayatchiyar and South Arcot-Vallalar
districts, on the east by South-Arcot-Vallalar and Thanjavur
districts, on the south by Thanjavur district and on the west by
Perumbidugu Mutharayar district. The district headquarters of this
district is located at Perambalur.
COMMUNICATIONS
National Highway No. 45, Chennai-Dindigul passes through
Perambalur taluk and thus interlinked the district with Dindigul
junction, Tiruchirappalli and Chennai. Apart from the National
Highway, the district has a well knit road system connecting all the
important towns, taluks and Community Development Blocks
headquarters within the district as well as with the adjoining
districts. Due to the limitations and locational characteristics of
the only metre gauge line which runs between Tiruchchirappalli and
Vriddhachalam junction, the buses play a dominant role in the
transport system.
TOURISM
The Brihadiswara temple at Gangaikon Cholapuram is one of the two
largest Chola temples in Tamil Nadu situated in Guruvalappar Kovil
in Udayarpalayam taluk. This temple constructed of stone by Rajendra
Chola-I, contains many Chola, Pandya and Vijayanagar Inscriptions.
The temple marks the last phase of the early Chola architecture and
its Zenith.
INDUSTRIES
The most important factor influencing the growth of urbanisation
and general economic development in a region is industrialization.
Industrialisation induces parallel growth in other non-agricultural
sectors of the economy, creates and augments the opportunities for
employment and income. Some of the industrial units of the district
are : The cement factory at Ariyalur, a unit of the TIDCO, commenced
production in late 1979. This project set up a cost of Rs.25.89
crores manufactured 2.47 lakh tonnes of cement. TANCEM is setting up
an asbestos pressure pipes project at Ariyalur at an estimated cost
of Rs.700 lakhs.
